By: Elson Gilsa Because of our indifference and apathy we have allowed the “dishonest, corrupt and the ugly” to return, win or steal elections and remain in power to oppress our people. We have been content to choose the “lesser evil” and compromise with those who practice “TRAPO “politics and naively think that things will change for the better. The year 2010 offers us the opportunity to select among the best Non-Trapo candidates from President to Congressmen. We each have a role to play and have something to contribute in attaining our aspirations for our country. We hope that as we remember Tita Cory, especially her moral courage, integrity, willingness to fulfill her different roles, and the principles and values that she stood for, may inspire us and help us remember that once we stood together as one people to bring about change. We rejected what was evil and stood united behind a moral and upright leader. It is either we do not appreciate the danger that we face as a nation, or we prefer to stand in the sidelines, or we want to do something but do not know exactly what to do. On the other hand, we have individuals and groups who have started to do something but their efforts are all dispersed, each one wanting to do his thing when the truth of the matter, is we all want one and the same thing,-good moral leadership and a corruption-free government. In fact, there seems to be transparency and accountability problems in our government. There is connivance here and there. And to think that ours is a christian country. If we look deeply, we see other problems like population explosion, massive poverty, terrorism, extra-judicial killings as well as the emergence of Multi-national corporations that pose environmental destruction. All these, in a Christian country. Our society’s failure of having good governance is not the lack of knowledge, talents, leadership skills and brilliant ideas but the lack of moral Christian theology that can help heighten our moral ascendancy and prolong a God-fearing and simple lifestyle. A challenge among us is to pray together, to reflect together, to decide and to act altogether and to connect God in our day to day undertakings as we unite to combat corruption and promote accountability in the public service. The need for this country to become fast-progressive, secure in all form of insecurities and massive poverty, and to become competitive in many fields is a leader that possesses the values of humility, simplicity, unshakable faith in God and other positive values that light the torch of moral democracy for the masses. We should also have a pro-people, pro-poor and pro-environment development programs and policies that will surely bring sustainable benefits to the major populace without sacrificing the environment’s bountiful fruits for the humanity. What really matters in our daily lives is the capacity to serve others in faith and love and to serve others in a Christ-like way.
